About the Authors

Hello! My name is Haley Short, I am a sophomore majoring in communications, graduating in spring of 2023. My intentions for anyone who reads this handbook is to get a more accurate and personal look into what life will be like at UNE and how you can be successful and find the resources that you need. Personally, when I toured this school and others, I did not ask that many questions. Mostly because I was shy, but also because I didn’t know what to expect, and I didn’t know the kinds of questions I should have been asking. With this handbook, I hope any questions you have are answered, as well as any questions that you haven’t even thought to ask, without the pressure and with easy access. Within this handbook there is advice from students in all years, as well as tips from a professor as well as a coach. The perspectives from all are so unique that there will be something to resonate with every person who reads this. As someone who had no idea what they were doing when they began college, this is something I wish I had access to. I hope any incoming student who reads this knows that they are not alone, and that college is a learning experience for everyone. Thank you so much for taking the time to explore our handbook, and I wish you the best of luck!

Hey! My name is Jack MacMullin and I am a senior studying communications here at UNE. I have been involved in both the ski and ride club and club hockey, both huge passions of mine since i was a kid. A larger passion of mine that takes up a lot of my time is film and photography. My freshman and sophomore year I was fortunate enough to be the junior filmer and editor under the head of biomedical research here at UNE creating pain narrative documentaries for people who suffer from chronic pain. I have also been fortunate enough to work with music artists in the Boston area and even fashion bloggers based in LA. in terms of academics, school was never easy for me, especially when I got to college. I was dismissed twice due to my grades but I am here to stay and I am not going anywhere, and I owe it to the resources the university has to offer talked about in this handbook.

Hey! My name is Keegan Stanton-Meas. I am a Junior here at the University of New England. I am currently majoring in International Business with a minor in Communications. I am currently on track to graduate in the spring of 2022, however I plan on taking one class in the fall semester of 2023 so that I can use my extra year of eligibility to play Football. Not only am I involved in Football, I am also an RA, Orientation Leader, and a member of numerous clubs around campus.  I am someone who did not come from a very prosperous family, and I am actually a first generation college student. So for me, this handbook would have been extremely helpful in navigating the ins and outs of college life. I hope that whoever reads this can feel as though they are not alone in this transition process and that they understand that there are people out there who have experienced similar experiences and are more than willing to help with that adjustment process. I hope that the reader is able to gain a better understanding from students like us who were once in their shoes and who are sharing what we have learned and experienced first hand as a result. Thank you for taking the time to read this book, I wish you the best of luck! Make lots of memories, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way because it is all apart of the learning process.

Hi, my name is Troy Dinga and I am I Senior at the University of New England. I will be graduating this spring as part of the class of 2021. When I first started out here I was an environmental science major but then I quickly realized that it was not the right major for me. I was in between a business major or just sticking with the environmental field. Then the university created a major that incorporated both Sustainability and Business. There are many things that I want this handbook to accomplish after reading it. I would like the first-time college student to read this and realize that all the teachers and resources available on this campus are here to help you. When looking at all of the resources that are here for students some don’t even use them. But after reading our handbook we want to show that they can be major help and they can teach you necessary skills that you will use throughout their time at the university. I want students to take away some skills that they might not have coming into college. There are so many lessons we have learned but we want to make sure that they take away the most important ones.
