Blog 7: Rubric

Most of the points on the rubric that provide the most learning opportunity for me is under the “Writer as Driver” category. For example, my first one is “Are your ideas front and center and do they reflect a deep understanding of the texts with which you engage?” This could be a learning opportunity for me as I tend to let my evidence guide the paper instead of my own claims. Revising with this in mind will remind me to bring my points forward and use my evidence solely to strengthen it.

Another point that provides learning opportunity is “Do your claim sentences work to develop or support your ideas as expressed in your position?” Claim sentences are something I need a lot of practice with. In high school, I was never really taught about claim sentences and so my paragraphs didn’t start out with a strong claim to be followed by my evidence. I just kind of started them and presented my claim in. the second or third sentence.

The third point is “Have you used synthesis to create new meaning?” I didn’t really understand what this meant, but I think it has something to do with combining ideas to create a theory. I haven’t thought much about this before and this will remind me to actively look for where I may have done this or how I can add. it.

The final point is under the “Organization” category, “Does your conclusion- while rooted in your paper’s main themes- also introduce new directions for thought?” All of my conclusions in previous essays I have written was basically a. rewording of my intro, so it will be interesting to learn to end y opening up a conversation.
